Choosing colours for your home can be a little overwhelming. This blog will explain how to match colours together and how to put colours together to create your perfect colour scheme.

With so many colours to choose from, we’ve put together some tips to help make that choice a little easier.

Consider your space & mood

What room are you painting and what mood are you trying to create?  Warmer colours are stimulating and work well in social areas like the lounge or dining room.  If you want a calm or relaxed environment in a study or a bedroom for instance, cooler tones can work well.

Colour schemes

You may have existing colours in a room that you don’t want to change e.g. furniture.  Neutrals are versatile and will not clash with your existing colours.
If you want to introduce more colour, you could mix light and dark tones of the same colour to create a tonal scheme which is subtle.

Or add a second colour in, to complement an existing shade by using a colour wheel.  Complementary colours sit on opposite sides of the circle on a colour wheel e.g. add red or purple to an existing green scheme.

For those who are adventurous, a triadic scheme uses equally spaced points on the wheel so you can combine 3 colours in a room.

Consider lighting

Light is very important and affects how a colour looks in a room.  Colours in a south facing room will appear warmer than in a north facing room.
Consider how a colour looks in both natural and artificial lighting in a room before painting the whole room.

Test your colours

Use small samples to test the colour in your room before you paint a whole wall or room.
